I first suspected the solenoid-operated unloader valve (#52 on the exploded drawing), which relieves pressure from the pump head at the end of each cycle to reduce the load on the motor when the pressure switch calls for the pump to restart, but I wasn't sure, so I ordered a check valve (#51), too.

The replacement part for the factory installed (solenoid-operated) unloader mechanism is a bypass kit, consisting of a nylon tube and fittings for each end. This eliminates the solenoid-operated mechanism altogether by connecting the check valve to a valve already present on the existing pressure switch. Complete instructions are included, and installation was easy, but this part didn't fix my problem.

Replacing the check valve did fix the problem, though. As I should have figured out to begin with, what was going on was that after the compressor ran its first cycle, the check valve didn't close, so the unloader valve, which opened at the end of the cycle as it's supposed to, let air air out. Since the malfunctioning check valve let the pump head stay pressurized, providing too much resistance for the motor to start.

My 7 year old compressor works like new, now, and I'm happy. My advice: if your compressor has symptoms similar to what mine had, start with the check valve.

Step by step instructions were included with my order. Unscrewing the existing check valve took a little effort. Otherwise, an easy repair.

Replaced the bypass kit but still didn't fix. It turns out it was a piece of debris in the check valve. Is working fine now.
