The mower would run only intermittently. There was also a burning smell.
The problem was that the switch had a burned contact.

I removed the plastic switch housing from the mower handle (one bolt). Then I opened the switch housing (several screws). I removed the old switch, moved the wires, one at a time, to the new switch, and placed the new switch back into the housing. The old switch lever and spring were actually OK, but I replaced them, too, since I had the switch housing apart. Closed the switch housing back up and put it back on the mower handle. Works fine, now.

How much resistence should the switch button have when pushed, i.e. towards easier or towards stiffer?

Hello 1463664,

It does take a bit of pressure to push the button on the Dewalt 681064-01 Switch Push Button. It just doesn't press in with just simply pushing it.

Why isn't this MM1800 Mower a grounded plug? My neutral side has melted at the pug and turned black. Can't figure out if this is due to a faulty Switch button or if it is a ground issue. I hate to redesign this, but I may have to retrofit a grounded plug and a manual switch to make this work correctly. Any suggestions before I tear it apart?

Hello 1345320,

The Black and Decker MM1800 is Double Insulated. Which means it uses a two wire system and doesn't need a ground plug. I would inspect the other electrical components of the mower for problems.

How do I rewire the switch

Hello nannie,

Hopefully you will be able to follow my explanation on where the wire leads go to the 681064-01 push button switch. From the top of the switch, where the push button is. The white wire from the motor cord is attach to it. The second terminal down is where the black wire from the motor cord is attached. The third terminal down is where the red wire from the motor cord is attached. The fourth terminal down is where the black wire from the power cord is attached. And then the orange wire from the motor cord and the white wire from the power cord are wired together with an appropriate wire nut. This is the diagram for a Black and Decker MM850 lawn mower. If the colors of the wires do not coincide with the diagram I have just described. Post your model number and we will make sure to get the correct diagram. If you do not feel comfortable wiring this switch. Take your mower to a Dewalt Service Center and they will be happy to wire this for you.
