Drill started making a crunching noise and stopped running

Removed the casing screws (there were a number of them but easy to do). Took out the unit out of it's molding. Slid the yoke out of the armature. The magnet inside it was broken in pieces and that's where the noise was coming from.
Replaced it with the new yolk and put it back into the casing. There is a notch on the rim of the yolk that needs to be aligned with the casing when putting it back in place. Also need to assemble the whole unit outside of the casing and then put it in in one piece so as not to bend the middle axle of the motor(armature) at all. Put the other half of the casing over the other piece that has the parts inside and secured it with the screws. The diagram on line was very helpful showing all the parts in detail.

Cordless drill was making grinding noises and binding

Took drill apart and replaced yoke. (Critical to have a schematic of the drill handy--can be brought up on line)--Be careful when disassembling, there are a couple small springs in unit. Replaced yoke and drill is as good as new.
