The fine adjustment mechanism on this Hitachi 3.5 HP router is a worm gear (threaded rod) that is engaged by a spring loaded piston. It is engaged by a reverse-threaded post.
0. tighten the plunge mechanism lever. You may need to loosen this lever from time to time, but keep it locked down until you need to raise or lower the motor.
1. Remove the fine-adjustment knob at the top using a 9mm allen wrench
2. Remove the bottom plate, four phillips head machine screws.
3. Remove the worm gear rod from below using a 12mm (1/2 in) socket. There are flat surfaces on the rod to hold it while loosening the nut. Retain the two washers above and below the base.
4. Use a 3mm socket wrench to loosen the lock nut on the fine adjustment lever and remove the knob.
5.There is a machine screw on the post, which I believe is for fine-tuning the position of the knob. Leave it alone.
5. Remove the reverse-threaded push-rod, turning it CLOCKWISE
6. The spring-loaded piston that engages the worm gear will pop out. This is the part that needs to be replaced.
7. Replace the part.
8. Reassemble by reversing steps 1--6. Test the fine-tuning mechanism as you go to ensure that it works and is correctly adjusted.
