Old Emglo compressor rebuild on coin operated press in coin laundry

spencer - April 25, 2018
Tool Type

Compressor

Difficulty

Medium

Time

1-2 hours

Tools Used

Socket set, Wrench Set, Snap ring pliers

I unbolted the cast iron cylinder from crankcase and used a cylinder hone to hone cylinder. Replaced connecting rod which had seized due to lack of oil. Had to clean aluminum from seized rod off of crankshaft. Used fine emery cloth to do this. Replaced ring set on piston and lubricated with light oil and slipped piston back in cylinder. The cylinder is tapered on the lower end to facilitate assembly, so the use of a spring compressor was not necessary. I used the snap ring pliers to remove the retainers to replace the valve plates. Then the valve plate and head was assembled using the new gaskets. I have been repairing these presses since 1970. The presses I am running in my laundry were all made in the early 60's. The compressors were all replaced with Emglo's which are the best quality I could find, and can be rebuilt many times. As long as you keep oil in them they last a very long time. The other parts came from other suppliers.
