It was necessary to remove the fuel tank, steering wheel shaft to replace the bearing. The gear at the end of the steering shaft needed to be removed in order the remove the old bearing. To remove the gear , a pair of snap ring pliers were needed to remove the snap ring. When everything was put back together the tractor steered like when it was new.

Deck must be removed first. Using snap ring pliers would have made the job easier. I was able to remove snap ring with needle nose pliers and a screwdriver.

Remove snap ring from pinion gear. Pull pinion gear off. Shove steering shaft up and out of the bearing. Reach up behind bearing and remove 2 bolts. The heads are not visible, go by feel. Once you start to turn them, the threads are visible on underside and you can see if you are on them. Take out old bearing and install new bearing same orientation. Tighten 2 bolts. Guide steering shaft down into new bearing. Reinstall pinion gear and snap ring. Good as new. I did not need new gear or snap ring, but ordered them just in case.
