Deduced that the one-way valve was not opening reliably, causing the machine to think there was no water left, stopping the cycle.

Removed the bottom cover (~ 8 cross-head screws), used pliers to slip off the retaining rings around the orange pipe with the valve in it. Blew into the new pipe to make sure the direction of flow was correct. Replaced the old with the new valve, replaced the retaining clips and screwed the base back on. The coffee maker has worked perfectly since.
