Easy 15-30 minutes (2 rated repairs)?

After many years of service, motor started smoking and stopped

    Tool Type

    Circular Saw

    Difficulty

    Easy

    Time

    Less than 15 minutes

    Tools Used

    Screwdriver, T20 screwdriver

    1. Disassembled the Ryobi circular saw using T20 screwdriver. All screws are on the battery side. There are about 8 of them around the periphery and two on the motor cover. Removing the blade is not necessary but you'll need to raise and incline the base plate some for clearance purposes.
    2. Unsolder or cut the leads to the motor. Note the orientation of the + and - terminal wires for reinstallation.
    3. Unscrew the 4 Phillips screws holding the gear/motor assembly to the main body of the saw using a P2 screwdriver.
    4. Unscrew the two screws holding the motor to the gear assembly using a P2 screwdriver.
    5. Install the new motor into the gear assembly taking care of aligning the leads in the same orientation. Use blue thread locker (optional) for reassurance. You may replenish the general purpose grease if needed.
    6. Solder the leads to the terminals in same orientation noted on step 2.
    7. Reinstall the halve of the plastic body and screw back all the T20 screws.
    8. Install a fully charge battery and run without load for about 1-2 minutes. Watch the orientation of the rotation and make sure is correct. If the cicrular saw spins backwards, check the polarity of the new motor. Also, watch for smoke, overheating, any burn smell or slowing of the RPMs. A little smoke may be ok but if it persist or there are clear indications of overheating, stop immediately and diagnose.
