Drill chuck froze up and would not open/close by hand

    Rick - January 12, 2019
    Tool Type

    Hammer Drill

    Difficulty

    Easy

    Time

    Less than 15 minutes

    Tools Used

Screwdriver, Pliers, Allen Wrench, Impact driver, Blue Locktite

    1. Opened the old chuck completely with a set of pliers by securing the drill in a vise.
2.Note: Using the pliers pretty much destroys the old chuck.
    3. Once open; using an impact driver and PHILLIPS screwdriver tip, I broke the screw loose inside the chuck. (left hand thread, so set your impact driver to tighten in order to loosen). Removed screw.
4.Using the pliers, I was able to stick a large Allen Wrench in the chuck and tightened down on it. I then loosened the chuck spinning counter-clockwise and removed it from the drill.
    5. I used the same Allen Wrench in the new chuck and tightened it on the drill.
    6. I put a drop of locktite on the screw and used the impact driver to re-install, changing the driver direction to loosen in order to tighten the screw.
    Done!

Removed the old chuck and replaced it with the new one. The video on the website showed me a trick to "pop" the old one loose. Saved hundreds of dollars. I've used Ereplacementparts.com before and will continue to use them. I run a shop that has about a dozen employees and we are pretty tough on tools.
