Saw wouldn't start after last cut

Glenn - April 8, 2018
Tool Type

Miter Saw

Difficulty

Easy

Time

15-30 minutes

Tools Used

Screwdriver

Made a cut, moved board and within 5 seconds tried to make another cut and saw wouldn't start. Thought lost power, nope, No noise or smell nor did I bind the saw. Figured the switch went but pulled and checked brushes anyway, good. Finished for the day. Next day brought in spare miter saw to finish job.
Pulled switch and checked with multi-meter, showed good. Power was getting to light on saw, shorted switch wires, nope saw still dead. I don't know what's inside the soft start can, figured some kind of electronics. An armature or field winding usually but not always gives warning or a smell so discounted an open winding but was prepared to test if need be. Ordered a switch just in case, brushes since they are a consumable item and should have on hand anyway and the soft start can. The spade connectors on my saw are small and the spade studs on the soft start can that was sent are big so no fit. I had to file narrower the studs on the soft start to fit the saw connectors. Once connected and reassembled I tried the saw, all back to normal.
