Medium 15-30 minutes (1 rated repairs)?

Shimano Sahara 500 FD drive gear bearing spindel and drive gear bushing worn out

Philip - November 17, 2017
Tool Type

Reel

Difficulty

Medium

Time

15-30 minutes

Tools Used

Screwdriver, Wrench Set, Tooth pick or q-tip

Note-Work on a tray with a small towel on it so small parts don't bounce and get lost.
Note- Remember to be patient. If you get frustrated, put the parts down and take a break for a while.
1- Remove spool
2- Remove handle screw and pull handle out
3- Remove rotor nut .Note that threading is left hand. So loosen opposite than most nuts.
4- Partially remove rotor, only need to pull out enough to remove left side plate.
5- Remove screws in left side plate, sometimes one screw is on opposite side, and remove left side plate.
6- Gently remove Drive gear, it may have to be wiggled a bit. DON"T FORCE it or pull hard.
7- Remove thin spacers from left side of drive gear spindle, and save. If left ball bearing stayed on the drive gear spindle, remove and re-insert into left side plate. If ball bearing is rough feeling it should be replaced.
8- Remove right side drive gear bushing by pushing out from out side of the right side of the reel with a tooth pick or a q-tip with the tip cut off, and replace with new bushing, or better yet, a new stainless steel or ceramic hybrid ball bearing the same size as left side ball bearing.
9-Put a drop of oil on each ball bearing. If using a new bushing instead of a ball bearing, put some reel grease on the bushing.
10- Apply reel grease to the teeth of drive gear, and also smear a thin coat of grease to the entire drive gear, including the spindles.
11- Gently insert the new drive gear, it may take some wiggling. Be patient and don't force it.
12- take the spacers you saved from the left side of the old drive gear spindle and replace them onto the new drive gear, left side spindle.
13- Gently put the left side plate cover back on the reel, (it also may need to be wiggled into place) and put the screws back in place
14-Put the rotor back in place. (It may have to be rotated and wiggled, also be patient and don't force into place.
15-Re-tighten the rotor nut. Remembering it is left handed.
16- Put the handle and the spool back on. Also wipe off any grease or oil on outside of reel.
17-If the reel feels tight and the handle does not turn freely, one of the spacers on the left side drive gear spindle may have to be removed. Push and pull the handle in and out while it is in place, there should be a small amount of play. If there is not, than remove left side plate cover again, steps 1-5 and remove 1 spacer from left side of drive gear spindle, and re-assemble.
18- Go to your favorite fishing hole, and catch fish..... ><))))))*>
