Dis-assembled cowling and shields. Removed head covers and replaced push rods. One valve was stuck due to valve oil seal failure. Removed head and checked valve seats. Reassembled and mowed my lawn. So far so good. Diagrams provided were very helpful. Ordered valve spring retainer by mistake as oil seal is not shown on diagram. Figured it out when parts showed up.

Lawn mower piston rings needed replacing on my kawasaki engine

    Brian - June 24, 2016
    Tool Type

    Lawn Mower

    Difficulty

    Expert

    Time

    More than 2 hours

    Tools Used

Screwdriver, Pliers, Socket set, Wrench Set

    1.Disconnected all wiring too motor
2.Removed headers in order to see pistons
3.Disconnected muffler, blade clutch, flywheel, etc so that the only thing left was the engine to crack open
    4. Once engine was cracked open and I could get to the pistons, I removed both pistons and replaced the piston rings
    5. Once new piston rings are in place, everything went back together in reverse order from when I took it apart.
6.replace all gaskets when putting engine back together
    7. The main thing to focus on after putting everything back together is to make sure the governor is properly adjusted. I had major issues with my governor and I needed an extra set of hands to set the governor properly.

Engine had low compression No Power and Running on one Cylinder

    Rocklan - June 13, 2016
I purchased this Lawn Tractor as a basket case, the owner had taken the engine apart and didn't know what he was doing. I inspected the major engine components and made the decision to use new gaskets and replace the push rods that he bent taking the head off the engine. My diagnosis was the intake and exhaust valves were out of adjustment and one head gasket was starting to leak. The engine did have 555 hrs. on it but the short block and cylinders were of normal wear for the hours on the engine. Inspected the heads and the valves and seats, cleaned and lapped the valves just because I was there. Installed all components, Engine restarted with no problems after 10 hours I will be checking the valve adjustment again and change the oil and filter again.
