Genuine Makita replacement part, this item is sold individually. The purpose of the 231839-2 Tension Spring is to return the Lower guard back to its original position after use. To attach the spring, one end is installed on the Lower Guard and the other end is installed in the Blade Case.

Guard broken on saw

Removed the broken guard and spring
Screwed the new lever on the guard
Then reinstalled the guard
Hooked one end of the spring to the guard, the other end to the housing

Old and worn out

On the saws just removed the blades and clipped the springs in place. Replacing the brushes only took removing the caps.

Removed blade and guard flipped around and removed spring.
Clipped spring in flipped back around and installed guard the only thing that was a little hard
Was the o ring had to squeeze a little hard to get on and off.
But other than that fairly simple.
