Trimmer head wore out.

James from Ellenburgh Center, New York

1. Take the knob, string reel and spring off of the trimmer.
2. Keep the spring if you didn\'t purchase a replacement.
3. Remove the star retaining washer by cutting or prying it off the shaft.
4. Remove the outer housing and clean the shaft then install the new housing and push on the net retaining washer. A deep 1/2\" or 9/16 socket works well for pushing the washer into place.
5. Reload spool and reassemble with the spring, spool and knob. Now get to work.

The trimmer head started smoking on my troy-bilt trimmer

I was weeding some weeds in small rocks and dirt and the head on the Troy-Bilt did not like that. It melted and after finding the parts, I only had to replace the outer spool assembly because it was melted beyond belief. The biggest trouble was finding out where the parts actually went because the diagrams are great for the motor and uppe r parts but not below the shaft. It took longer cleaning the melted mess than replacing the parts after figuring out the location of each part. The new part included a washer, but who knew that the washer was to be press fit into the bumper to hold the bolt in it? Little things like that are what take the time. It worked great for the first couple of hours. Then it smoked again. This time I replaced the head with a metal one off of a Craftsman trimmer. It fit perfectly and I have not had a problem since then. At first I thought that the first time was a fluke, but after spending the money for shipping the first time, I looked closer at the problem and decided to beef up the head. Too bad they don\'t make a metal replacement outer spool assembly. That would have fixed it as well. Everything that I have ever purchased from ereplacementparts has worked perfectly including this assembly. The type of head should only be used in mild areas though.

Removed the retaining washer, then the old outer spool. Put the new outer spool on and slid the retaining washer down the shaft. Used a deep well socket the was a bit smaller than the retaining washer, and tapped it down snug. Good to go.
