Hi Larry, Thank you for your question. There is no head assembly for this trimmer, but there is a spool with line, part number 310917001, and if you need the spool cap, the part number listed for it is 522994001. We hope this helps!

On this craftsman trimmer, is there a spring that goes in under the spool?

Trimmer cap wore thin while trimming and rubbing on concrete and then disintegrated it wore very thin.

Trimmer not releasing new string, and deflector shield not cutting the line well.

1. Remove the old cap
2. Take out the spool.
3. Remove 4 screws (Phillips) securing the grass deflector assembly.
4. Looked at a great YouTube video showing how to remove the plastic slider and spring.
5. Mine did not come as easily as in the video had to use a flat screwdriver to pop it back and out.
6. Put in the new plastic sider and compression spring.
7. Put the new deflector assembly on.
8. Put the 4 screws back in.
9. Replaced the spool.
10. Put the new cap on.
11. Works like a champ again; line feeding out like it used to.

Cap broke

Press on the side tabs of the old cap to release it. Then line up the tabs to the slots in the spool housing and press it in. I bought 2. Plastic will break again.

Needed to hold motor shaft to unscrew head. Unfortunately design provided no provision to do this. Unit had to be disassembled to access motor shaft.

Had to replace worn spool cap

Remove the worn cap by pushing on the sides of it where the plastic tabs are and pull the worn cap out. To replace the cap you will need to line up the tabs to the mating holes in the top housing and push it in.
