Hello David, thank you for your question. Bend the string so it makes a little hook and hook it into the top hole on the spool. Take the other end of the string and do the same thing. Hook it into the bottom hole. Follow the arrow on which way to wind the string. Wind both strings tightly at the same time keeping the top string in the top groove and the bottom sting in the bottom groove. Cut the string and place each side into a grove in opposite ends of the spool, on the side that holds the spring. Insert each string into the holes on the trimmer head. Screw the knob back in place and pull on the strings to disengage them from the grooves. We hope this helps!
