This is an OEM replacement part from Ryobi. The retainer is used in trimmers, and fits between the spring and the outer spool assembly. It helps to hold the spool in place. This retainer is sold as an individual replacement part. A wrench may be required to install this item.
1. Remove bump head (the same procedure to replace line on the spool)
2. Place new retainer on top of the shaft
3. Use 1/2\" deep well socket on top of retainer ring
4. Tap socket with hammer to gently drive ring to bottom of the spool housing
The repair required replacement of the lower shaft as a unit and then replacing trimmer head unto new shaft. It was all pretty much straight forward. All parts were competitively priced. The lower shaft was back ordered and arrived slightly ahead of estimated date. The associate I spoke to was knowledgeable and answered all questions.

Outer spool assembly was messed up as well as the bump knob.
Removed the retaining washer, then the old outer spool. Put the new outer spool on and slid the retaining washer down the shaft. Used a deep well socket the was a bit smaller than the retaining washer, and tapped it down snug. Good to go.
1. Removed the trimmer head.
2. Replaced the missing retainer using a nutdriver.
3. Returned the trimmer head.
4. Replaced with the new bump feed knob.
