1. Removed the screws from both sides of the engine
2. Removed old brush and springs (had to use needle-nose pliers to get at the old brushes)
3. Placed in new brush and springs
4. Put screws back on both sides of the engine
5. Tested mixer - WORKED
6. Made cookies ;-) for the kids

Research how to videos. Decided problem was probably the phase control board, but in the interest of time and since the additional parts did not cost much, I also replaced the control plate and motor brushes. Note, the control plate is attached by three screws, two of which are spring loaded. Hence, their adjustment is critical. I too k close in photos of their extension or placement using a ruler so I could ensure correct reinstallation of the the replacement plate.

Checking brushes damaged caps

Replaced brushes they only go in one way so watch how they come out, also use a large screwdriver that fits tight on caps to prevent damage

Sparks were coming out of motor with a burning smell

Pulled out the old brushes and holder, sanded the armature to remove blackened area and installed the new brushes and holder. Plugged the mixer in and it ran smoothly like new.

Removed the old brushes and installed the new ones. The only tricky part was trying to figure out the alignment.

Only turned on occasionally, problem was obviously electrical and brushes were first accessible parts to inspect. Severe cupping at ends of magnet suggested excessive wear and immediate replacement

Unscrew thumb screws on either side of body and swap out spring loaded magnets. Reset thumb screw and original tension spring.

Install the new brush and springs
