Product Description

?

This is an OEM sourced replacement part used on Poulan chainsaws. A centrifugal clutch uses centrifugal force to connect two concentric shafts, with the driving shaft nested inside the driven shaft. Often centrifugal clutches will function even when they shouldn't, far beyond the point of when they need to be replaced. Keeping an eye on equipment performance will determine when the clutch requires attention. This assembly includes metal clutch drum and a sprocket. To replace this item you would need a wrench set. • Remove the chain brake, bar, and chain. • Remove the cover and spark plug. • Bind the piston. (If you skip this step, the clutch will spin freely and you won't be able to remove it. If you have a piston stopper, just thread it into the spark plug hole. ) • Remove the clutch. • Replace old drum with a new assembly • Seat the clutch. • Unbind the piston. • Secure the bar, chain, and chain brake. • Tension the chain

The chain drive sprocket had broken teeth and the whole drum assembly needed to be replaced. Also, while I had the saw apart, I decided to install a new filter, and a new chain tensioner.

The chain tension kit and the filter were simple replacements, but the drum assembly was a small challenge. I removed the out cover to expose the drum assembly. You Tube has some good videos connected with replacing the drum assembly, but basically you have to use a piston stop of some sorts. The pros suggest using a piece of cord to j am the piston, but this did not work for me. Instead, I removed the spark plug and used a wooden dowel slightly smaller than the spark plug hole. This worked well and were no concerns in ruining the piston or rings. Once the piston is arrested you will note that the retainer has reverse threads. Most drum assemblies are marked to show which direction to either tighten or loosen the retainer. simply use a screwdriver or whatever to knock the retainer loose and back it off. Once the retainer is off it is simple to replace the assembly, taking note of any washers or bushings that were removed in sequence. Replace the chain and cover and then re-tension the chain. Save yourself a lot of money doing it yourself. I am a logger and the professional chains I use are very hard on the drive sprocket. Now that I know how to do this, it will save me hundreds of dollars a year. My parts arrived quickly and were to exact specifications.

First Off I Set the saw on my work bench took clean rags on air blower from my compressor cleaned the saw up from dirt saw dust and old bar oil from the saw. Then removed the bar plate from side of saw backed off the chain adjuster removed the chain and the 20\'\' bar. Removed the chain catcher then cleaned up all the saw dust and old ba r oil by doing a thorough cleaning Then removed the old drum and sprocket. installed new drum and sprocket Tightening the center sprocket nut to factory specification. Reinstalled new chain catcher Reinstalled new chain with new 20\'\' bar installed the saw cover adjusted chain to factory specification

Carburetor removed the top of the saw were air cleaner is located. removed air cleaner and all plastic covering once again did a thorough cleaning. removed old Carburetor with purge. thorough clean Carburetor Area. Reinstalled new Carburetor with purge W47. Tightening Carburetor to factory specification. Reinstalled new air cleaner. all plastic covering Filled up with new mixed fuel added new bar oil. after 3 to 4 pulls saw started right up did some small adjustments on the Carburetor which was easy now saw runs like a new saw. doing a thorough cleaning make life easier to when doing this kind of repair. I recommend adjusting the Carburetor as needed they will wear out if you don\'t take care of them keeping clean Mixed gas in them help as well. Some folk don\'t think about it while out cutting wood but dirt can still get in from around the fuel cap good idea to clean around the cap before refilling the fuel that will save lot Carburetor troubles and Issues. I any case I purchased my replacement parts from eReplacementParts.com and everything went as I planed and hope for. thanks to eReplacementParts.com

Engine would not start which was determined to be due to low compression.

Dismantled the saw down to bare cylinder for replacement. Replaced the piston ring but not the piston or piston rod. Clutch sprockets were badly worn so it was also replaced. Internet was a help on how to remove the clutch. Removing the handle vibration spring off the cylinder head was a challenge. After several attempts I determined it w as attached with a star headed bolt (could not see it through the small hole in the spring end plate). The shaft on the star driver was larger than the hole so it was drilled to a larger hole. The bolt and spring were then easily removed and reattached to the new head. Since the handle is attached to the tapped spring end plate that was drilled out, a larger fastener was used to accommodate the larger hole. After the repair the engine easily started and runs fine. Lesson learned was that it can be more than a fuel or ignition spark issue as a reason the engine would not start.

Easy fix with a 1/2 inch impact gun and the proper sprocket tool. No need to use a piston stop or rope. The shaft and drum are LEFT handed thread. Took 10 seconds to replace once the bar was off.
