This will not allow you to remove the lid until either the pressure is released by the pressure regulator or the cooker has been taken from the heat source.

Hello Jerry, thank you for your inquiry. We found a testimonial from a previous customer that should prove helpful. " Old vent pipe nut was corroded. Locked lid with vent pipe in vise. Removed nut ( the hardest part) with adjustable wrench. Chose not to use WD-40. Replaced part." If you need help placing an order, customer service is open 7 days a week. Removed the air vent cover lock and gasket with pliers and replaced with the new one, screwing it together. Replacement of the sealing ring and over pressure plug was as simple as removing the old ones and putting in the new ones.

Pliers, Adjustable Wrench, steel wool (Brillo Pad), paper towels
Soak new lid seal gasket in hot water. Remove air vent and old gasket with pliers and adjustable wrench. Pop out old 'over pressure plug'. Clean lid of old rubber seal residue with steel wool. Rinse with clean water and dry with paper towels. Replace air vent and gasket with pliers and adjustable wrench. Pop in new 'over pressure plug'. Remove new lid seal gasket from hot water, dry with paper towels and insert into lid.
DONE!

Old cracked sealing ring on pressure cooker

Removed old sealing ring. Used flat screwdriver to scrape cover to remove debris from lid, polished with steel wool. Replaced seal. Removed overpressure plug and replaced, no tools needed. Removed cover lock and replaced.

Old vent cover lock leaking requiring replacement

Pliers, Vice grip pliers, bench vice, hacksaw.
Parts Used
Removal of the old vent cover lock was difficult because the internal threads had corroded so badly that it was impossible to unscrew the two pieces of the vent cover lock requiring the use of a vice to hold one end while hack sawing the other end off. Installing the replacement part was very easy. I applied a small dab of Permatex aluminum paste to the threads so that future removal will be easy.
