This part is installed on top of the piston/connecting rod. Its purpose is to create a seal in the cylinder so that it can build pressure. If this part wears your tool will not be able to operate as intended.
Removal of the cap (4 internal hex cap screws) revealed a broken O-ring. There was a gasket under the cap. I ordered the most likely parts to wear or leak. No other tools were required to disassemble enough to replace the piston seal, and another O-ring in the cap. I lubricated the O-rings and piston seal with Vaseline. After reassembly,

The nailer was not shooting the nails, so I removed the 4 screws securing the top cover of the nailer to expose the piston and removed the \"O\" ring and split ring and replaced both with the new ones ordered from Replacement Parts. Porter Cable air stapler wouldn\'t fire. Removed four allen head bolts to remove cap. Removed old piston ring and replaced with new one. Got new one started in one spot and worked it on little at a time until it was completely on. Replaced cap & worked like a champ.
Removed the rear cover with a hex wrench. Pried out the piston, replaced the gasket. Reassembled and tested the nailer. Elapsed time less than thirty minutes.
Tip: Pay attention to the orientation of the piston rod that drives the brad. The push rod is grooved on one side but not the other.
