The clutch spring attaches to the transaxle and is made of metal. It is available as an individual replacement part. This genuine item is supplied by the original equipment manufacturer for use with Murray lawn tractors and snowthrowers. A screwdriver, a set of pliers, and a hammer may be necessary during the installation of this part. This item may become broken and will need to be replaced.

Removed the housing, unscrewed the clutch and replaced with the new parts. reassembled and tested.

Failed to steer properly, and could barely move in forward or reverse

Side panel sheet metal and the fuel tank must be removed to access the steering shaft and bearing. (my fuel line was long enough to allow for the fuel tank to be rested on the engine so I did not drain the fuel)
Remove two retaining bolts from the bearing and slide the steering shaft upward so you can see the retaining snap ring. ... Read more r />Remove the snap-ring that retains the steering gear and bearing to the shaft.
Remove and replace the worn out bearing.
Reassemble in reverse order.
To replace the spring. Jack the rear wheels of the lawnmower about 8\" off of the ground (use jack stands for safety) and you will have enough room to replace the spring without removing the mower deck.
