Hardest part was getting the old oil seal out without marring the counterbore on the oil sump where it seats. \"Marvel Mystery Oil\" worked well to install new part and assemble the rest. No more adding oil every time to mow the lawn. Won\'t keep a pizza pan under lawn wower in the shed for the oil leak now. Next time will not mow over st ring that wrapped around the crankshaft and tore up the oil seal.

Comment: I worked in a lawn mower repair shop for about four years. This repair was very easy for me but may be a bit challenging for someone not really familiar with an engine from the inside ...

1. Drain oil and fuel; remove control cables, blade, and then remove engine from mower base.
2. Clean end of crankshaft with emery paper so shaft will move easily through old sump bearing. Put oil on shaft before you remove old sump.
3. Keep engine positioned with shaft upward; remove sump bolts. Tap sump to break seal and remove sump. (Always keep engine with shaft upward when sump is off! Otherwise camshaft will fall out and you\'ll have to re-time.)
4. Clean old gasket residue from block. A razor blade works nicely for this. Be careful not to score the soft aluminum mating surface during this operation.
5. Install new gasket - comes with sump - and reinstall sump. Torque bolts to 6 ft-lb.
6. Install new oil seal. Flat side goes to the outside. Use a large, deep socket or other sleeve to CAREFULLY drive the seal into place.
7. Reinstall engine to mower base; reinstall blade. Reconnect control(s) cables.
8. Add oil and fuel and you\'re ready to go ...
