Replace the Primer Bulb and spark plug on a Homelite trimmer

Ernie from Edwardsville, Illinois

Total Repair Time:
Less than 15 mins
Tools:
Screw drivers
Parts Used:
870174002, UP04803
Parts arrived quickly, and were correct replacements for the worn parts. A flat bladed screwdriver removed the screws for the primer bulb, and a spark plug socket was used for the plug, then gapped the plug at 0.025 . The only recommendation I have is to buy the gasket that seals the primer bulb assembly to the carburetor - I would have felt much more secure with the fix had I replaced the gasket, which will be exposed when you remove the two screws holding in the primer bulb retainer.

Product would not start and stay running. It sounded as if it would fire-up, but would not catch and run.

Tools:
Pliers, Screw drivers, Socket set

1. Removed all fuel.
2. Removed all parts to be replaced, as well as trim and parts that needed to be removed in order to install new parts, including the spark plug, air filter and air filter holder, carburetor, old fuel tank and fuel lines, and fuel tank bumpers.
3. Installed new spark plug after setting proper gap.
4. Installed new fuel tank and lines, and bumpers, having noted where the new lines would go when I took the old tank off.
5. Disassembled the carburetor (simply removed 4 screws around the primer bulb to do this) and replaced the tiny fuel filter screen inside, then reassembled it. (Note-the small needle was used to remove the old fuel filter screen.)
6. Replaced carburetor on its two mounting posts.
7. Replaced the air filter holder, with new filter installed inside of it in its place on top of the carburetor.
8. Checked all nuts and screws for snug fit.
9. Added new-fresh fuel.
10. The device fired-up and ran well on the second pull of the starter cord, after proper priming per manufacturer\'s instructions.

1. Remove 4 screws for the fuel tank with a small Torx wrench
2. Remove 2 rubber tubes (feed and return) coming from the tank to the carburetor.
3. Screw the new tank in its place using the same screws.
4. From the new tank, find which of the 2 tubes has the filter inside the tank (the CLEAR one)
5. Attach that one to the carb input, the pipe on the carb that feeds the primer bulb (the thing you press 7 times before starting.) It\'s the pipe closest to the bulb.
6. Attach the other tube (the fuel return tube) to the other pipe on the carb.
7. Fuel it and fire it up.

would not run

First problem was solved with new gas tank and hoses since the old hoses were rotted. The e-replacement videos were invaluable since my bulb needed to pull gas through the carburetor and I was assuming it pushed gas into the carb.

It would then start and idle with choke on but would die when revved up. Did carb overhaul, re placed a couple of bad looking gaskets, and cleaned everything up. Same results. Ryobi blower had a Walbro Wyc-8 carb which has no adjustments I could find. Finally bent the metering lever up to allow more gas in. Had no idea how much to bend it. But when I put it back together it runs pretty darn good. Have to keep flipping the choke on until it warms up, but I\'m not sure I want to take it apart and try bending the lever more. Probably would mess it up.
