This is an OEM replacement recoil kit supplied directly by Poulan. The starter pulley spins the flywheel to start the engine when you pull the starter rope. The most common reason for replacing the starter pulley is if the starter rope won't retract. Please note this kit does NOT include the rope and rewind spring. When replacing this part make sure to disconnect the spark plug wire before starting repair.

Remove the starter housing from the saw. Untie the knot on the starter rope at the starter handle. Let the rope recoil into the housing so the tension is taken off of the starter spring. Remove the screws that secure the starter hub and the rope pulley. Remove the hub and pulley from the saw. Remove the starter rope from the old pulley. P
... Read morelace the new rope pulley onto the starter housing and make sure the pulley aligns with the recoil spring. Install the pulley retaining screw at the edge of the rope pulley. Rotate the rope pulley so that it tensions the recoil spring. Wind the spring until it won\'t go any farther and then back it off until the hole in it for the rope lines up with the rope hole in the starter housing. Thread the rope through the starter housing and into the hole in the rope pulley. Tie a knot in the rope at the rope pulley. Carefully let the rope retract back into the starter but don\'t let it all go in. Thread the rope through the starter handle and tie a knot. Install the new easy start spring to the rope pulley and align the new starter hub to the spring. Secure with the screw. Re-install the starter to the saw and test.
I took the unit apart after reviewing the instructions. New parts nearly fell into place and the unit was in operational shape. Thirty minutes tops. The cost of the repair kit was by far less than I expected it to be. Delivery was on the date quoted.

The hub Eps spring would bend out of shape and not allow the cord to recoil back in saw.
I removed 4 screws holding the housing and removed the housing from the saw, then removed the screw holding the old pull start assembly and removed it. I placed the new recoil spring in the housing and then the cord hub, the eps spring and outer retainer that engages the flywheel. I found that the screw holding the assembly to the flywhee
... Read morel was too short. When tightened it would not allow the string to recoil. I put a small washer under the shoulder of the screw which allowed me to tighten the assembly and also allowing the string to recoil. The washer was not included in the kit or mentioned in the instructions, so you have to improvise. I made it by cutting a wire termination end which turned out to be the right size on the inside and outside. I had been dealing with this issue for some time and Poulan customer service gave me no help in resolving it.
1. Placed new spring starter into housing, and sprayed with WD-40
2. Greased shaft and put plastic pulley onto shaft
3. Put other parts into place - the plastic collar, the coil spring and the screw/allen key
4. Pulled string into proper hole in pulley, wrapped the end around the groove in the pulley

6. Started winding the rope onto the pulley until the spring was tight; then, unwound 1 turn
7. Put the string through the plastic housing and tied a loop in the string so it wouldn\'t all pull through.
8. Pulled the string through the handle and made a knot
9. Untied the loop and let the string go all the way back into the housing until the handle stopped it.
10. Reattached the housing to the chainsaw.
11. Rope pulls back all the way each time.
