This idler gear is supplied directly from the original equipment manufacturer. The poly plastic gear is made for use with the Penn 9M Special Purpose Levelwind Reel. This gear is fitted into the left side plate assembly, balancing the speed with the worm gear. A screwdriver is required for the repair. The idler gear is sold individually. However, it is also included with the left side plate assembly (1182148).

Level wind pawl caught the worm shaft and stripped the level wind drive gear

1.Remove screws on clicker side cover
2.Remove worm shaft
3.Remove worm shaft cover just to get out of way
4.Remove idler gear screw
5.Remove idler gear replace with new
6.Reinstall idler gear screw
7.Reinstall worm shaft cover and worm shaft
8.Reinstall cover and reinstall screws

1 - Remove the left side of the reel (plate opposite the handle)
2 - Remove the screw holding the clip for the clicker
3 - Remove the clip
4 - Remove the gear (nylon idler gear)1184060), replace it with new gear
5 - Clean off the internal parts, reapply Penn reel grease
6 - Continue to assemble the reel

1. Remove handle
2. Remove faceplate screws
3. Pull off faceplate and spool
4. Remove clicker vise screw and clicker vise
5. Remove idler gear screw and old idler gear
6. Install new idler gear
7. Follow steps in reverse to put reel back together

Level wind was broken

Unscrewed one side.
Replaced plastic gear.
The Pawl cover was a little tricky putting it back on.
Its basically common sense.
Now the reel level wind works fantastic.
Would have done it 20 years ago if I knew it was that easy.
That\'s how old my reel is.
