This is a genuine Craftsman part for use with Lawn Tractors. The steering shaft 156546 connects the steering wheel to the sector gear. This part is sold individually. The most common reason for replacing the steering shaft is when the steering wheel will not turn the mower. Here is a list of tools that are needed to install the steering shaft they are a 3/4" socket, mallet, 3/8" socket, floor jack, pliers and a 9/16" socket.
Take the entire steering mounting bracket off the chassis. It\'s only 4 bolts and you can easily get them from the bottom if you drop the deck all the way down.

Pinion gear (Shaft Assembly-Steering) and rack (Gear, Sector) finally wore down to where they didn\'t engage reliablly.
0. Park tractor with front wheels straight and somewhere where you have room to pull the mower deck out.
1. Remove mower deck. You can do the repair without removing it as a previous commenter has suggested, but you\'ll need two elbows, two wrists, and seven fingers on each arm to reach the screws that hold the bottom of the steeri
... Read moreng assembly to the chassis. So just take the deck off and it\'s quite easy after that.
2. Remove steering wheel (pop off the plastic center cap to find the big nut) and separate the upper part of the steering column from the lower.
3. Remove battery and battery tray.
4. Remove lower steering assembly by removing the 4 screws that hold it to the chassis from underneath the chassis.
5. Disassemble lower steering assembly. There is large circlip that holds it together and is kind of a pain to remove, but you don\'t need a special tool. Something thin to lay across the ends of the circlip and a hammer will do the job.
6. Replace the worn parts with the new ones and reinstall circlip. Try to do so such that the the steering shaft is more or less centered on the sector gear and at the same time, aligned so that the steering wheel will be centered when reinstalled. This will take some fiddling around but isn\'t hard.
7. Assembly is the reverse of disassembly!

Removed battery and panels covering steering rod and gear,cover on steering wheel to access rod.from there it was nuts and bolts to remove gear.put back in reverse order replacement parts were exact fit so no problems.Turns like a new lawnmower.
