Noisy bearing in wood lathe head

1. Removed bearing cover plate and drive pulley - pulley difficult to remove (left hand threaded)
2. Drove shaft out with wooden mallet and wood block
3. Drove outside bearing off shaft with wood blocks and vice
4. Drove inside bearing into head casting - went easily
5. Drove shaft into casting and reassembled pull ey and cover plate

Delta lathe now runs smoothly and quietly. Small investment in parts and time.

Bearing burned up and melted the bearing cap which is no longer available.

Ordered the bearing
Bearing cap not available. Called obsolete in some places.
Removed motor
Slid old bearing off motor shaft. Required a bit of tapping
Bought a 2GÇ¥ To 1GÇ¥ pvc adaptor.
Cut about 1/4GÇ¥ off both ends of the pvc
Filled in the 1GÇ¥ side of the pvc with liquid steel.
After dryi ng, cut a 1GÇ¥ slot in the 1GÇ¥ side for the speed adjuster
Sanded the inside of the 2GÇ¥ side for the bearing to fit. Very little sanding needed.
Placed bearing in bearing cap
Slid bearing and cap onto motor shaft With bearing toward motor
Remounted the motor taking care to line up the slot in the pvc with the speed adjuster

Bearings on Lathe worn out

Since the manual did not cover how to replace the bearings, I just started to dismantle what I could. Struggled with removing the ring retainers on each bearing. Then discovered that the pulley spring that keeps pressure on drive pulley was preventing me from tapping out the bearings. Ended up using C-clamps and vise grips to compress th e spring enough to allow access to the bearing. First bearing out the outside was easy to remove. However I couldn\'t reach the 2nd bearing as the drive pulley was in the way. Loosened the drive pulley, re-positioned the spring, then used an allen wrench with a long shaft to tap out the last bearing. Fortunately, installing the new bearings was much easier since I could drive them in through the face of the mount. There probably is a much easier way to remove the bearings than what I did, but I couldn\'t find any instructions.
