When the brushes failed, the arms that hold them against the armature were damaged. They were held in with #4 star drive screws (TINY!!) which I initially thought were Allen screws, they were that hard to see (and very difficult to approach, being tucked in behind the motor fan). removed old brush, inserted new brush. replaced missing cover door and screw.
DONE!

way cheaper than getting it repaired with a min 80 bucks to just look at it, shipping was fast and accurate. I use E Replacement parts often and would recommend them for any DIY person.
