This is an authentic replacement part manufactured for use with Makita miter saws. The safety cover is used to house the torsion spring on the blade cover. This safety cover is available as an individual replacement part, please see model diagram for associative parts.

The lifting mechanism for the guard is terribly engineered and wears out quickly, especially if it is at all loose.
