1. Remove overhead valve cover.
2. Remove push rods.
3. Remove old spark plug.
4. Remove intake and exhaust manifolds.
5. Remove engine head bolts and head.
Used solvent to clean carbon (baked in coke) from head, valves, piston head and exhaust port. Cleaned gasket surfaces and installed head, push rods, int ake and exhaust manifolds. Checked valve clearances and installed valve rocker cover with gasket and sealant. This was a 21 hp B&S Intek engine. This must be done every 2 to 3 grass cutting seasons (book says every 300 hours) to keep these engines from burning oil and for them to run smoothly.

I did some research on you tube and the18.5 hp Briggs engine is know to blow head gaskets. Mine has 400 hrs on it. I pulled the head off and found a very small tear in the head gasket. If you look on you tube you will find a lot of videos on this. Some are very well done others are a joke. Followed all the video instructions including torque specs. Put a fresh oil change in and I was cutting grass in a couple of hours with no smoke out of the muffler. Word of advice, be very careful when removing the head, take great care to not loose a valve cap when cleaning the old gasket off. They are small and hard to find after you drop one.

Good luck, it\'s an easy job. Mike M.

I removed the deck from the mower. Remove the blade bolt and washers and the blade. Removed the bolt on the jack shaft pulley, remove the pulley. Then removed the five bolts holding the mandrel on. The old mandrel fell right off. Lined up the new mandrel to the bolt holes on the deck and tighten them in cross pattern, until the were tight . The mandrel is not threaded, but the bolts are self threading. I then attached the pulley to the mandrel shaft and tightened the nut. Attached the blade then attached the deck back onto the mower. I then removed the muffler and the muffler adapter and replaced the gaskets.
