Removed engine from riding mower, turned it upside down, don\'t set it on fan, pushes crankshaft up enough it holds crankcase cover up so it won\'t seat, removed crankcase cover, cleaned and replaced gasket, replaced and torqued bolts, then reinstalled and filled with oil. Replaced PTO shaft seal while I was there. No leaks!

Check rocker arm movement to determine cam condition.
Replace worn out cam (one lobe gone).
Good time to change the seal at this time too.
Carefully adjust the valves \"by the book\".
Check / clean carburetor very carefully. The idle jets are very small and clogs aren\'t easily seen.
(took 2 attempts)
Turns over freely now and runs like a top.

Thanks !

Oil Leak

Total Repair Time:
More than 2 hours

Removed Engine, removed oil pump, removed oil pan, spent a great deal of time removing the old gasket taking care to prevent pieces from entering the engine. Removed seal, reinstalled new seal, reinstalled new gasket, replaced oil pan, replaced oil pump and o-ring, reinstalled engine, installed new drive belt, started and checked for lea ks and proper operating. Everything fit perfectly and now with a new dry drive belt the mower is once again moving forward and backward at the desired speed without the essence of burning belt and oil.

A note of caution, when reinstalling the oil pan over the non chamfered crankshaft the seal is very easily damaged. It requires assistance in the form of carefully manipulating the seal over the crankshaft. I used a jewelers hex screwdriver but any small blunt object to guide the seal without cutting would suffice. Also scribing a reference mark on the the governor arm and shaft ensures it goes back on in the proper position. If you forget to do this you must reference technical data for proper installation to prevent engine overspeed damage. Simple procedure but too long to write in space provided.

The balance weight connecting rods broke in a 20 HP>single cyl engine from lack of oil.

This repair is for expert or advanced mechanics, as it requires a complete engine disassembly.
I don\'t know if a lot of people will expend the effort to make this repair. The crankshaft must be removed, and cleaned, to install the lower rod, along with the timing gear and connecting rod.

I found that some aluminum fro m the balance weight rods had transferred to the crankshaft journals, preventing the new ones from slipping into place. The crank lobes needed to be polished to accept the new ones..
It was much less expensive than buying a short block,( by several hundred dollars) and I\'m glad the parts were available. They arrived on time and in good shape, making the job relatively easy.lol.

Intake push rod bent

I jumped the gun initially and pulled the engine from the tractor, thinking the connecting rod had broken. I should have checked the valve push rods first. That would have saved me the time of removing the engine from the tractor and replacing the pan gasket and crankshaft oil seal.
It was pretty simple after I determined that my p roblem was the push rods. I removed the bent rod installed the new one I purchased from eReplacementParts.com. Adjusted the valves(You can find several youtube videos to guide you through this procedure). The engine started right up and I mowed about two hours with it this weekend.
I wish I could tell you why the push rod bent, but I can\'t. If anyone has an explnation I would love to here it.
