    Questions & Answers for Spring

Where can I find a video of how the spring is supposed to look on the clamp? TIA
Ken for model number DCS381 asked on 2023-10-26
Hi Ken, Thank you for your question. We have included a link to one of our YouTube videos that you may reference on how to install the torsion spring, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPzQHKOMi0s. The reciprocating saw in the video may appear different from yours, but it will give you a general idea on how to install the part. We hope this helps with the repair!

    Blade clamp failed.

    Brett - September 7, 2021
    Tool Type

    Reciprocating Saw

    Difficulty

    Hard

    Time

    30-60 minutes

    Tools Used

Screwdriver, Pliers, Power Drill, T20 T25 driver bits. Pick set.

After reading through a couple of tutorials I found online, none of which applied exactly to my saw, I dove in.

Took the shoe off with a T20 bit.
Pulled the rubber boot with the yellow blade lock lever off.
Used a screwdriver to pop the spring off. It fell inside and no amount of prying would get it around the blade clamp collar, so I had to pull that.
Used pliers to pull the clamp pin.
Used the pliers & screwdriver to pry the blade clamp off the drive shaft. It should come off reasonably easily, but mine was caked with years of sawdust & grease. I gave it a good cleaning with Q-tips and toothpicks.
Juggling the blade clamp collar, and the spring in an attempt to put them back on at the same time (each end of the spring goes into a hole in the collar) proved quite futile. I ended up dropping the spring over the shaft, got the clamp on and pushed the pin in place to hold it.
Using a combination of needle nose pliers and picks, I was finally able to get the spring ends to drop into the appropriate holes in the clamp collar.

None of the work was "hard", but it was exceedingly frustrating. The worst part was getting the spring back into place after I had replaced it.

Once I got everything back in place, it holds the blade rock solid. I hope this one lasts another 3-4 years or more as the original spring did. If it doesn't I might just chuck the saw (I had to buy a new one because I needed it for the job where the blade kept falling out) and use only the replacement. That's just how frustrating it was.

A good video with some tips and tricks on how to get this spring in place would be most helpful.

    Reciprocating blade retain spring broke

    Tool Type

    Reciprocating Saw

    Difficulty

    Easy

    Time

    15-30 minutes

    Tools Used

Screwdriver, Pliers, Socket set, Torx bit driver

I sent in a detailed summary of the procedure already for a Type 1 Dewalt 303 sawzall but basically remove the front cage, remove the blade clamp by pulling out the retaining clip. Remove the broken blade retain spring noting the orientation. Put in the new spring and reinstall the blade clamp and retaining clip. Orient the new spring as shown in the exploded parts diagram and you will find a somewhat obvious hole for the relatively straight end of the spring. Once that is in place, take a needle nose plier and pull the curved end of the spring over to the somewhat obvious catch point.
    Then reassemble.
DON'T LOOSE THE BALL BEARING used for the blade retain on this model of the 303 sawzall.
