This ring is an OEM part supplied from DeWALT for use in impact screwdrivers. The retaining ring attaches to the shaft on the end of the screwdriver to secure the sleeve, the spring, and other components. If the ring becomes damaged or is lost it will need to be replaced. Once the ring is removed everything will slide off, so make sure to keep track of the order and orientation of all parts. Replacing this part will require a screwdriver and pliers. To ensure proper installation please refer to the specific diagram for your model. This is an individually sold part made of durable metal.
Once the top snap ring is removed, everything just slide off. Keep track of the order and orientation of the parts. Replaced a broken compression spring and new ball. Reinstalled assembly, clipped snap ring back in and it worked!

... Read moreplacing the compression spring and 2.5mm ball make sure your work area is well lit, clean, and you have a magnet handy. The spring can get away and jump outside your work bench easily.
3 - Remove compression spring and 2.5mm ball - used the tip of an engraving pen to compress the spring and remove the ball and the spring in controlled fashion.
3 - Installing compression spring and 2.5mm ball - placed spring in cavity, use tip of engraving pen to compress spring enough to allow ball to be dropped in, slowly decompress spring to secure ball and remove pen.

Installed compression spring in first and then put ball bearing in on top of it then installed collar and spring with washer then used small screwdriver to force snap ring over top into groves.
