1. eReplacementParts categorizes the Metabo paint remover as a router, but it is actually a grinder and acts like a planer. Many reviews say its weak link are the three small plastic doors that open to reveal side blades and which allow the user to remove paint on surfaces at a right angle from the main surface but easily break off. I can vouch for the fact that they do break off too easily, but that it is a great tool nonetheless. While the tool is awesome for removing thin layers from the larger surface of clapboards, the right angle feature for under the clapboard\'s edge is only moderately effective as the depth is minimal, can\'t be adjusted, and as such is limited to surfaces that are truly at a right angle to the main surface, which for old wood clapboards is random at best. Still, it will remove big chunks of paint and at least smooth that plane of the clapboard while doing an excellent job on the large face of the clapboard.
2. Small plastic prongs on the door clip over a tiny axle on one side of a spring around the axle, and those prongs are what breaks. To install a new door simply press the spring down on the side opposite the small clip that holds the door shut and press the door home on the axle, it\'s that easy.
3. I will say that the doors are an important safety feature as this is a serious tool with plenty of power behind blades spinning very close to the users fingers. Using the tool requires you to hold it at every angle in awkward positions up on a ladder, and the flying chips of, in my case, lead paint mean that the you need to wear goggles or face shield that can fog up and hearing protection. You can use the tool with a door or two missing but the vacuum attachment will not suck up nearly as many particles and you\'ll have zero chance of do-overs if you accidentally grab the tool too close to the business end.
