YT3000/ model l91728815; steering issues causing excessive wear to front tires

phil from Pickens, South Carolina

Tools:
Socket set, Wrench set
Parts Used:

Removal and replace parts went ok except nuts are very tight and I had to use an extension (large box wrench) to loosen the nuts and retighten to as found condition.
The big problem was trying to get the bottom pan/plate to fit on the side rails. The clutch shaft fits through the rails at each side with a bushing that has a flange that causes a very tight fit.
I had to loosen several of the metal bolts that keep the rails attached to the engine base area so that the side rails could flex inward to allowing fitting the bottom plate to the rails. This was a very hard part of the job.
Watching the how-to videos I found helped a lot except none show the difficulty with final bottom plate install

Removed the old linkage by removing the nut on both ends and installing the new linkage. I had done the same on the other side about a year ago - if I had it to do over I would have just replaced both when I did the first one. The replacements are superior to the originally installed components

Used a 5/8\" socket with a breaker bar to loosen nut. Removed old assembly and replaced with the new one. Worked perfectly.
To my misfortune, the left side drag link broke while mowing today. Will be placing another order later today.
My Craftsman 42\" tractor mower has taken a beating the past 12 years in the country. Mowing much more than I should, on some pretty rough terrain.
