Pulled all the plastic off, removed the head (do not mix up push rods) cleaned gasket surface with blade and kept flat. Just make sure to re-gap your valves...unless you have done heads before this is not just replacing a gasket....after replacing the gasket the valves were off by over .020. That will either snap your wrist when trying to start or just be a nightmare. You need to know what your doing and not off YouTube and have the right tools to torque settings down

This was a free lawnmower from a neighbor. Found blown gasket and disassembled. Found that the left lower head bolt had been cross threaded. Probably a factory defect but who knows? Worked with head bolt to remove (loosen/tighten/loosen until I could remove it) Checked surface of head and block with straight edge. Used (large sheet) fine sandpaper on a flat surface to ensure surface of head was good. Cross threaded bolt was toast. Ordered bolt and head gasket. Purchased 7mm tap from local parts store.
Parts arrived in a timely manner. Chased threads in block with 7mm tap and cleaned out. Assembled using GM head gasket sealant that I\'ve had for years. Tested on my yard with no problems.

On a side note: Briggs engines aren\'t those of my dad\'s era or mine for that matter.
