Somehow water ended up in the gas tank and with enough gas in the tank to trap the water on the bottom. The results were severe corrosion and rust through pin holes.

Removed gas tank in order to find out the severity of the rust. Once I determined it was beyond repair I then ordered a replacement and installed it.

Note: Fortunately Briggs and Stratton designed this gas tank in a way that it has a \"valley\" directly below where the fuel filter installs (which is at about a 30 degree angle ). This allows for quite a bit of unwanted contaminants to be kept away from the filter inlet.
On the down side it also allows those same contaminants to go undetected for an extended length of time and as a result causing corrosion.
*** Inspect the inside of the gas tank with a flashlight on a regular basis to stay ahead of any future problems.
