The ends of the cable which are made out of S curved very easily turn out of holes on both ends, then reverse that procedure to install your new cable in place, when doing this you will need to prop snowblower up with whatever you have handy to hold it up to be able to install bottom end of cable, lower back down engage handle to see it engages, total job time less than 15 minutes.

The Auger Control Cable Was Broke and the Tension Bushing Was Missing

This repair was done on a Craftsman Snowblower Model Number 536.885200. I replaced both the auger cable control and the tension bushing. On the snowblower I removed the boot from the spark plug for safety purposes. I then removed the broken cable control. I loosened the tension nut from the tension spring with a 7/16 wrench, but did not r emove the nut. I then opened both packages and fit the new cable control through the top slot of the new tension bushing. I then attached the tension bushing to the tension spring of the snowblower and fished the end of the cable through the hole under the tension spring. I then fished the cable behind the belt and then connected the cable end to the hole under the snowblower where I removed the old broken cable. The other end of the cable was then hooked into the top hole in the auger control handle with the auger control handle disengaged. I then engaged the auger control handle to tighten the cable and slowly released it. I then tightened the nut on the tension spring. I then put the boot back on the spark plug. Job done.
Video on YouTube helped me out.

Broken control cable

1) Both ends of the control cable have a formed metal part that slips into a hole in the control arm at the low end and into an identical hole on the control lever handle. The control cable is kind of \"springy\", so it took a couple tries to get fed properly through to the control handle.
2) When the old cable broke the tension bu shing went flying. Never did find it, so had to purchase the bushing as well. The trick here is to put the tension bushing onto the cable for installing the cable in the machine. Spread the slot slightly with a screwdriver to get the cable to slide in.
3) Purchase a spare cable to have on hand in case it breaks again.

Over all it went well. It took longer then i expected. I guess if I would have did it before it would have been easer. Some screws broke when taking apart had to replace with new.
Suggested.. TAKE PICTURES WITH YOUR PHONE BEFORE STARTING TO TAKE IT APART.
