To make a long story short , the problem was caused by a wrong pinion gear bearing in the side plate . My brother wasn\'t sure if it had been serviced by someone. The repair required the right side plate , the correct pinion bearing , the retainer and the shift lever. The correct bearing measured .098 thousandths while the wrong bearing measured .112 thousandths . I never worked on the reel until the problem started happening . I took my Fathom apart and measured the bearing . That\'s how I found out what was wrong . Went ahead and serviced reel completely and now it works great .
