After a year of assembling and reassembling, cleaning, and greasing the problem persisted. I hadn\'t been using the reel much, because of its issues, but upon fine inspection, I noticed the plastic yoke might be slightly worn and causing the pinion gear to not fully disengage. Once I received the parts from ereplacementparts.com my previo us experience disassembling and reassembling, allowed me to replace the parts in just a few minutes. The reel has worked great ever since.
