1. Removed old starter shroud using a star bit
2. Removed spark plug with 3/4 inch spark plug socket.
3. Rotate the starter cup while looking looking in the spark plug hole and set the piston at the bottom of the stroke.
4. Insert enough pull starter rope into the cylinder to prevent the piston from raising, thus stoppin g the crankshaft from turning while removing the old starter cup.
5. Remove the old starter cup by twisting it counterclockwise with my hand. No need to use hex wrench on mine.
6. Remove nut plate from old starter cup and place it in the new one.
7. Install new starter cup by threading it clockwise onto the crankshaft and make sure it is tight.
8. Remove rope from cylinder and replace spark plug.

Upon disassemble of my Poulan P338PT starter, which had less than 10 hours of use, I\'d noticed that the plastic \"starter cup assembly\" had melted on to the engine starter end of the crankshaft. I called Poulan\'s Customer Service and asked why this happened with so few hrs. of use, and received the response \" just buy another cup asse mbly.\" at a ridiculous price from them. So, I searched the internet and found ereplacementparts. com. It was not until I studied ereplacementparts Poulan factory parts schematics online that I discovered a small thin washer (that was never installed from Poulan) goes between the crankshaft and the starter cup assembly. To prevent it from contacting the crankshaft and melting it. Thanks to ereplacementparts I figured out what went wrong and ordered the parts that saved me from another break down. Thanks again.
