When the spool / line was replaced, the spring was lost and extending the line had to be done manually with the unit off.

I also decided to get a new blade and replaced that as well. Replaci ... Read more ng the blade should have been even easier, but it was a bit more difficult than expected, and possibly due to the caked on grass and not understanding how the blade was fit into the housing. My guess is once you know and the unit is relatively clean, I think it would be a matter of pulling it out by force and putting in the new one by force, and with pliers since it is a sharp blade. I could not see how to pull the blade out or if there was anything holding it in place. It looks like it is just wedged in there but I wasn\'t sure.
So I removed the bolts on the housing in that area so that I can separate the housing right where the blade is to make sure it will pull out properly without breaking anything. Then I used pliers to pull it out, and it took a bit of force to pull it out all the while making sure there was no tab in the way. Once I pulled it out, I placed the new blade in the same way and tucked it into the spot where the original one was. Now, there is a hole in the middle of the blade so I also used a tiny screw driver and put it through the hole to help center it while forcing it back in. Maybe there is a special tool that holds the blade and has a handle to make it easier to push back in. Finally, I tightened the screws that I loosened.
I don\'t think it was necessary to loosen the screws. I did that to get better access to the blade and also thinking that part of the housing may have been preventing it from coming out. The blade and surrounding area had a lot of caked on grass so it was difficult to see it clearly. I would recommend cleaning it thoroughly before replacing the blade. And perhaps there are instructions online for how to replace the blade. Replacing the blade took about 15 minutes or so.
I haven\'t tested the unit yet, but I am sure it will work fine. Another thing I thought of is thoroughly cleaning the spool, housing, and all the parts in that area, including the vents for the motor, and then spraying graphite or other dry lubricant on the mechanisms that release the line when in use, to allow for smooth operation.
