Unplug machine. Remove dust collection shoot. While facing the front of machine, remove two small sheet metal screws at top right corner and opposite rear corner near the crank. Raise side panel approx. 1/8 th of an inch and pull bottom of panel outward to remove panel. You will be able to see both belt pulleys clearly. Install belt onto the first two grooves of the small pulley and while holding it in place install the the belt onto the first two grooves of the large pulley. You can then \"walk\" the belt onto both pulleys one groove at a time. You may have to turn the blade mount a little to assist in \"walking\" belt on and I would recommend removing the blades. Make sure belt is lined up evenly on both pulleys. Reinstall blades [ if removed ] , end panel and dust shoot and you are done. It took me about 30 minutes to install after I figured out how to remove the side panel.

After taking off the top and the side walls, which you need to do to get to the pulleys, this finger buster takes trial and error. I attempted to change this myself, which I spent nearly 45 minutes doing. I then called in a helper. You need a helper because the pulleys are so close together that the belt twists when trying to slip it o n. Just not enough thumbs to get alone. When slipping this belt on you must first loop the smaller motor pulley first-these belts are toothed so you can only slip a little on at a time, then while having some one else use their thumbs to keep it on the smaller pulley you slowly turn the belt onto the larger lower cutter pulley. Again a little at a time. Once started you need to rotate and set the other teeth on the belt by turning and pushing. First attempt we pushed on too far and the belt did not line up in the grooves with the other pulleys, so make sure they are set in groves aligned with each other because if not I think the belt would rub and shred itself.

Remove the top shroud. Remove the cutter deck from the base to access the end of the cutter barrel from behind the height adjustment screw.
Install the new key, pulley and nut, putting a thread locking agent on the cutter barrel threads to hopefully prevent the nut coming adrift again.
Reassemble planer after polishing an d waxing the alignment rods at the four corners of the machine.

Dewalt DW733 Planer - Type 1

Symptoms: When planing, drive chains would jump causing a cut line across the board being planed.

Cause: Found drive roller bushings worn elliptical causing excessive looseness in drive chains. Further inspection revealed worn ball bearings, cutter head drive pulley worn and loose, m otor bushings excessively worn, lack of grease in motor gearing; gear shaft ends/bushings not lubricated (from factory), unsealed ball bearings in motor shaft housing dry and unlubricated (from factory).

Solution:
1. Completely disassembled the planer and removed worn parts, shafts, motor, disassembled motor gear housing, removed ball bearings, removed head-stock, removed head-stock bearings, cleaned all cast housings, shafts, etc.

2. Reassembled gear housing using sealed and lubricated ball bearings, lubricated drive gears, replaced motor brushes (be sure to run-in the motor brushes under no load for 10 minutes before re-mounting in head-stock casting), reassemble head-stock cutter shaft bearings, cutter head shaft, pulley and feed roller bushings.

3. Note: lightly lubricate roller bushings with heavy duty grease where bushings slide against casting and lightly lubricate the roller shaft ends with heavy grease. A steel shaft against a steel bushing is not a good thing and is what caused the wear to begin with. Ideally, these bushings should have been made with sintered bronze.

4. Continue reassembling remaining parts and realign the head-stock for even planing side-to-side.
Second note: For 733 type 1 planers, remove the locking nut at the top of the two height adjustment screws and discard. These cause binding when raising and lowering the head-stock.

A drive gear had broken and the belt showed signs of wear

I ordered a roller drive gear and drive belt for my Dewalt DW733 thickness planer. Initially the gear broke and after taking my 20 year old planer apart I decided I should also replace the original belt as well.
I order the wrong drive belt, I didnÆt pay attention that there are type 1 and type 2 of my planer.
I contacted cust omer service for a return label. The representative helped me with the return and found me the correct belt. I had the belt in 3 days and my planer works like new.

The gear slid on the shaft with the tap of a small rubber mallet. The key is to put the chain on the gear BEFORE sliding it onto the shaft.
The drive belt assembly doesnÆt have an adjustment. The belt is stretch fit.
It can be a bit difficult for one person. I used a wrench, ( a 23 mm if I remember correctly) to turn the smaller pulley and pushed the belt onto the larger pulley.
With the extra leverage of the wrench I was able to turn the drive system and easily get the belt on.

Now I can start building Christmas presents with my large supply of rough cut Oak, Maple and Walnut....

Removed top cover
Accessed two fixed pulleys
Since both were fixed, no adjustment had to stretch belt turn pulleys (larger with box end wrench) and use pry bar to assist belt on pulley. No clearance between planer adjusting bar and pulley so turning the pulley with wrench with belt between wrench and adjuster bar was \"almost\ " impossible!
Takes 4 hands and multiple tries but successful

Dissassembled planer to find what the problem was. Removed old belt, pulley and key.
Ordered new parts to replace damaged parts.
New parts arrived in a week as promised.
Installed new parts. Had to stretch belt during installation as it was quite tight. Then reassembled the planer. It ran smoothly, and worked as n ormal on testing.
