Symptoms indicating need for repair: Hammer drill motor didn\'t start when trigger pulled. Motor did start when trigger held and other hand used to smack the tool. When running, excessive arcing seen through the motor cooling vent slots.

I removed the screws on the handle to permit separating the two halves of the handle and get access to the brush holders. Discovered copper cable detached from the top brush and after removing the pressure plate, I could see that the top brush was worn so much that it would no longer contact the armature reliably. When the parts arrived, it was pretty straightforward process to remove the old and install the new. One precaution for the particular hammer drill model I repaired concerns black spacer pads and silver cylindrical components that fit in the halves of the handles. Be sure to look for them when disassembling the tool and replacing them during reassembly.
