Inserts reduce splintering and chip-out on the cuts. It also prevents thin slices of wood from jamming in between the blade and the plate during a cut. If an insert is missing or damaged it needs to be replaced. This is a high-quality replacement for a missing or a faulty dado throat plate that was included with a new unit.
