The cage that houses the pulley and flywheel was in contact with the 90 degree fitting. The vibration over the years pierced the brass fitting , causing the air leakage.

I removed the small section of wire frame of the housing, in the immediate area of the 90 degree fitting, elimating the possibility of any further interference. Problem solved. simple and inexpensive .
