1. Removed blade.
2. Removed gear cover.
3. Removed bolt holding drive gear and clutch hub together. This was not easy. Was able to kludge together a brace to hold clutch hub stationary while backing out the bolt.
4. Drive gear and double set of bearings were withdrawn from case. Used small bearing puller to pull bearing s off drive gear shaft.
5. Replaced drive gear with new one and used a deep socket same diameter as bearings to pound bearings back into place on drive gear shaft.
6. Replaced clutch assembly.
7. Lubed new gears and replaced into case.
8. Put case cover back on and installed new blade.
9. Tested

I removed the old gas tank and tubing and than replaced it with the new parts. The web site provided good video of the repair which I followed. The tubing had to be manipulated to prevent kinking of the line. Make sure your gas tank is empty before starting the repair work.

Blade was spinning on the shaft. D shaped locating shoulder on the drive shaft was rounded off.

Michael from Louisville, Kentucky

1 person found this instruction helpful.
Difficulty Level:
Easy
Total Repair Time:
Less than 15 mins
Tools:
Screw drivers, Wrench set
Because the belleville lock washer had been left off when the blade was changed, the lock nut became loose, allowing the blade to spin on the drive shaft, rounding off the D-shaped shoulder that locked the blade In position. The fix was to replace the shaft. I also bought a new belleville lock washer and lock nut. After I had the shaft out, I wished I had also bought a new shaft support bearing, since it would have been easy to replace it with the unit already apart. To remove the shaft, start by removing the left hand thread lock nut that holds the blade on the shaft. Remove the dished belleville lock washer and blade. Removed the gearbox cover behind the blade. The drive shaft and bearing come off with the cover. Remove the snap ring or circlip that holds the shaft in the bearing. Insert the new shaft into the bearing and replace the snap ring. Insert the shaft back into the gearbox and reinstall the gearbox cover. Slip the new blade over the shaft followed by the belleville dished washer and the left hand thread lock nut. A small cordless impact driver makes removal and installation of the nut very easy, but it can be done with hand tools.
