Needed to purchase high temp RTV for the gasket between the cylinder head and crank case. There is no gasket on parts list for a gasket here.

metal got into cylinder and scored the piston and cylinder
disassemble the saw. (might be best to take pictures BEFORE disassembly and throughout the process)
note where fuel lines go, choke level and throttle linkage.

note the direct of the old piston before removing from connecting rod. I used a punch and hammer to remove the old wrist pin. no need digging out the c clips sense the piston was not being reused.
lube the needle bearing in the connecting rod, and the new wrist pin, before assembling. I used engine assembly lube. You can use clean engine oil. best if one c clip were installed then slide the new wrist pin in followed by the other c clip to hold the wrist pin in place.
lube the cylinder wall and the piston.
when installing the piston ring, note the open end notches and the locator in the piston groove. these need to align when the ring is compressed.
when sliding the piston in, gently compress the piston ring so the piston will slide into the cylinder.
I used \"the right stuff\" gasket maker to put the 2 parts of the cylinder back together (cylinder and lower crankcase cover). I also used it on the rubber seals the crankshaft bearings are in. note: use a conservative amount on the seals.
properly torque the 4 bolts that hold the plastic body, lower cover and cylinder together.
reassemble the saw. all other fasteners (going into plastic) I snugged. plastic will strip out.
1) stripped every part off of saw to reveal cylinder assembly.
2) opened up cylinder assembly and removed piston and crank shaft
3) installed new piston and cylinder assembly.
4) reinstalled parts in reverse order of removal
5) be sure to align fly wheel using markings on bottom with markings on shaft.

Engine would not start which was determined to be due to low compression.
Dismantled the saw down to bare cylinder for replacement. Replaced the piston ring but not the piston or piston rod. Clutch sprockets were badly worn so it was also replaced. ... Read moreas attached with a star headed bolt (could not see it through the small hole in the spring end plate). The shaft on the star driver was larger than the hole so it was drilled to a larger hole. The bolt and spring were then easily removed and reattached to the new head. Since the handle is attached to the tapped spring end plate that was drilled out, a larger fastener was used to accommodate the larger hole. After the repair the engine easily started and runs fine. Lesson learned was that it can be more than a fuel or ignition spark issue as a reason the engine would not start.
disassemble engine and lay parts in order of removal, before reassembly be sure to use form-a-gasket on bottom of cylinder. be sure piston ring split is over pin in groove, slide cylinder over piston. reassemble.
Pulled engine from case. Pulled cylinder and piston. Put new parts in and put it back together. Runs like new. Cleaning the exhaust would help with the issue of a burned piston and cylinder. I pick the saw up cheap.
