After ascertaining the output shaft threads were reversed I removed output nut. The removed output shaft retains screws. Next, after removing output shaft in its housing, I removed spring \"C\" clip from the output shaft. Removed the output shaft from the bearing and the housing. Placed the new shaft into the bearing housing, replaced the \"C\" clip onto the shaft. Placed the shaft in its housing back onto the edger and fastened all 6 screws. Next, placed the new edger blade onto the output shaft with a washer tightening the new nut onto reverse threads. Job complete.

Blade was spinning on the shaft. D shaped locating shoulder on the drive shaft was rounded off.

Because the belleville lock washer had been left off when the blade was changed, the lock nut became loose, allowing the blade to spin on the drive shaft, rounding off the D-shaped shoulder that locked the blade In position. The fix was to replace the shaft. I also bought a new belleville lock washer and lock nut. After I had the shaft out, I wished I had also bought a new shaft support bearing, since it would have been easy to replace it with the unit already apart. To remove the shaft, start by removing the left hand thread lock nut that holds the blade on the shaft. Remove the dished belleville lock washer and blade. Removed the gearbox cover behind the blade. The drive shaft and bearing come off with the cover. Remove the snap ring or circlip that holds the shaft in the bearing. Insert the new shaft into the bearing and replace the snap ring. Insert the shaft back into the gearbox and reinstall the gearbox cover. Slip the new blade over the shaft followed by the belleville dished washer and the left hand thread lock nut. A small cordless impact driver makes removal and installation of the nut very easy, but it can be done with hand tools.
